New Aerial Glass Suspension reviewed by Rand Woodbury

Posted by Editor on January 7th, 2008

My name is Rand Woodbury and I have never reviewed a piece of magical equipment in my life. And to be honest, I have never really wanted to review anything. That is until today. I, personally, have never really found this effect to be mind blowing. And that probably because I have never done a bottle act or anything with glasses. However, every version of this trick I have seen just left me thinking ‘whatever’. There is just no other way, for me, to express it. They all had something I didn’t like about them.

Well, now there is a version of that trick, from Will Golden, that fixes every flaw in the idea. What do I mean? Follow me here: no hooks, no weights, no ringing or noisy bottle, no searching for the catch (at all), no chugging liquid and it can secretly release while you’re pouring … if you wish. OK, what gives? Mr. Golden’s version of the effect took seven (7) years in development. Check! Mr. Golden makes every single, by hand, himself. Check! And Will has never had one returned; once sold. Check!!! It was put into my hands today and I could not believe how easy it was to work or there is no possible way of MISSING the glass – period !!! It is simply a perfect version of this trick. Hey, no missing and you are left CLEAN, with nothing to hide. If I didn’t know how it worked, I would have never figured it out. I can only think that Will looked at every other version out there and said, “How do we get rid of this flaw?”, over the past seven years. And by using really original, conceptual improvements … he simply figured out the best version this effect. They are available from Denny & Lee’s Magic Shop’s and the suggested retail price is around $120.00, but worth ever single penny. My hat is off to Will’s ingenuous, new, and WAY IMPROVED version of a legendary effect. Five stars! If you do this effect – this version is better. If you have never done this effect, you can – one second after you take it out of the box. I do mean WOW!

BroomThroughBody

Penetration effects are not uncommon in magic. They are usually small or frickin’ huge. It’s nice to see something for the parlor performer once in a while.

Now that I have gotten the pleasantries out of the way, I want to preface this with: In no way am I saying I dislike this product and don’t buy it. I am simply giving you a heads up of the cons in my opinion. The idea is solid; I just think the application could have been a bit better thought out. Lemme tell you why….

The ad claims the following:
• No Set up
• Performance ready right out of the box!

Now I cannot obviously tell you specifically why these two items from the list are inaccurate. If you want to perform this effect out of the box EXACTLY like the demo video you need something special that they DO actually provide, but it does require a set up. To do it properly (or if yer a victim of body hair) you have to do as I did and create a special add on to wear under your outfit.

The price is also a bit steep for what you get. I expected an internal mechanism only to find the product did not meet or exceed my expectations. (Which, in magic, is not unusual) The effect indeed does deliver what it sets out to do. A broom thru your body. At first performance, it looks exactly like what it is however. Only thru careful routining and practice will this effect sell. Do not think of this as a “street” effect. (Why is EVERYTHING put out nowadays perfect for “Tha street yo”.) It is a vignette or interlude effect to a larger routine.

All in all, it’s a good idea with a high price. There are some minute details I personally would change to make it function better, but that’s me. So if you are looking for a penetration effect that won’t cost thousands or can be seen from more than 10 feet away, this is your best bet so far. Enjoy.

QUICKCHANGE

Quick Change covers it all – at least it feels that way. You start with the basics, just getting used to putting on and taking off a jacket – fast. This basic practice gets you acclimated to the first, most basic principles of the art of Quick Change and helps you limber up as you practice your first costume change.

The picture/photo illlustrations are quite quite clear and the ‘detailed’ looks at the various methods of clasps, releases, etc are hastily drawn but manage to clearly show what needs to be shown.

Of note, this book was originally written in German and later translated into English; hence, spelling errors and slight translations are present but can be overlooked.

STRANGEGARDEN

You’re going to learn some funky awesome bits in this book. Caleb Strange’s magic seems to be all about the presentation – and boy are they good. Mr. Strange is a master of scripting powerful magical experiences covering everything from setting, props, and patter, to create extraordinary emotional sensations.

Most of the magic in the book is described as magic that occurs at a party for an intimate group of friends and company, others are illustrated upon a beach or in a garden. It’s going to take a little effort to restructure some of the effects to perform them in your realistic performing situation (i.e. a soundtrack playing African drums instead of having a set of live drummers).

It was funny to read the elaborate presentations and experience the magic through Caleb Strange’s words, and then read the description which gets into setting the scene, building up the atmosphere, and then describing the often simple method (…basically, it’s just a switch, everything really relies on your patter and pacing…)

If anything, this book should inspire you to take your presentations up a level (or two or three). Caleb’s magic and presentations are extraordinary and make lots of classic magic presentations seem lazily constructed.
