Corey Martin is a regular contributor to iTricks Raves.

Most of us remember when we first saw Sinful. For me, it was on an episode of Criss Angel’s “Mindfreak”. A signed coin visually penetrates a sealed soda can. hedshot Magic at one of it’s purest moments. Since that episode it has been hailed as one of the greatest impromptu effects of all time. With all of the classic movies getting a “facelift” these days it is nice to see that some of the great magic effects are getting similar treatment. If you liked the “original” version of Sinful, then you are going to love the new style, tips and handling of the new version. Inside this book not only shows you how to perform an incredible piece of magic, but it also lets you in on just how intense of a process goes into creating something so special. Welcome to Sinful: A Graphic Novel.

“Sorry, I don’t have anything on me.”

What a terrible thing to say.Yet I hear it so many times among magicians. All of that is about to change.

The Official Spam:

Quote:
Impromptu pen through bills do not get cleaner than this! The following description is exactly what the spectator sees.

Phase 1

The performer borrows a pen and a bill. The bill is folded in half and the pen is inserted vertically into the fold. The bill is unfolded so that the spectators can clearly see the pen is in the bill. The bill is refolded. The performer then slams his hand down onto the end of the pen, driving the tip straight through the fold of the bill. The pen is pulled through the bill and placed behind the performer’s ear. The bill is then opene d… and shown to be completely unharmed!

Phase 2

The bill is once again folded. The pen is then inserted horizontally into the bill so that it is cradled in the fold. The spectators can clearly see that the pen is inside the bill (and it really is!). The performer then grips the tip of the pen and moves it in a sawing motion. The pen melts right through the bill! The bill is opened and seen to be completely unharmed. Everything can be immediately handed out for examination.

Points to consider:

~There are no gimmicks.
~Nothing is added or taken away.
~There are no tears or slits in the bill.
~The trick is 100% impromptu. Borrow any bill and any pen or pencil and you are set to do this effect.

When you purchase Driven you will receive an 11 page PDF containing 19 color photos, clearly detailing every stage of this devastating effect, plus a three minute video which contains a full performance from the spectator’s point of view and a performance from the performer’s point of view. Between the easy to read PDF and the concise videos, you’ll be performing this stunning piece of magic in no time!

You can never have too many impromptu miracles in your repertoire. And Driven is one of the best!

The Teaching:

This is a written e-book that you download onto your computer. Also, two videos are includ ed which show Cameron performing Driven from the front, and then the back. With all three of those resources, you should have no problem learning this. There are also 19 photographs. Cameron is a great writer; he explains everything clearly with detail. The video instructions, which contain no words, help the teaching of the effect a lot. You should have this down in no time. But remember, practice makes perfect.

The Quality:

The e-book and video quality are very good. The photographs and video are clear. You can tell it was not made through a web-cam. It’s better than most homemade productions I’ve seen, and I applaud Cameron for that. It’s a step up from others.

—————————————————–

Intro: Cameron starts with a quick introduction to the pen through bill plot. He states what his is based off of and talks about other impromptu versions on the market. He also quickly tells how he came about creating this effect.

Phase 1: This is the phase in which you slam the point of the pencil straight through the bill. The method is very clever, and nothing like I’ve seen before. The nice thing about this is that you show the pencil going into the bill, no doubt, and with no fishy moves slam it right through. It looks great. You then pull the pen all the way through the bill and show the bill restored. All patter is given to you and there are photos to explain this phase.

Phase 2: This is the phase in which you place a pencil horizontally inside the folds of the dollar bill. You then magically saw the pencil through the sides. When you open up the bill, it’s completely restored. This method is also very clever. They can actually see the pencil inside the bill, unlike other versions. Once again, there is a super large amount of photos and everything is very clear.

Alternate Handling for the First Phase: This is just something quick you can do to make the first penetration easier. It looks the exact same.

Notes: Cameron talks a little here about patter and angles. Some helpful advice.

—————————————————–

The Story:

One of my good friends knows how to perform the pencil through bill using the slit method. He’s showed me it before. So once I practiced this and got it up to par, I showed him this. He was blown away. He literally grabbed the bill out of my hands, giving me more than one paper cut, and started examining the bill. He ripped the pencil from my hands, nothing to see. Let’s just say he loved this!

Overall:

I really like this. I own Misled, but haven’t performed it in the last few years. From now on, I’ll probably just use this. I never liked using the gimmick, as sometimes I borrowed different colored pencils, and this just fits the bill. It’s so practical it’s unbelievable. With this, you will never be stuck with nothing to perform. Just borrow a pencil, borrow a bill, and perform. It couldn’t get much easier. A solid 9.5/10.

This is an ultra visual transposition done in the spectators hands!!!

Effect:

The spectator holds the Tic Tacs while you have the Altoids. In a shake the tin of Altoids transforms into the box of Tic Tacs. The spectator then opens their hand revealing that they are holding the Altoids.

Video and Quality: The video is very well edited, put together and produced. It covers everything really indept; quality was great, no problems hearing or seeing what was being said or done.
Teaching: Dans leaves no rock unturned. His teaching is is taught with the upmost precision, very detailed; with all tips, tricks and subtleties. Very understandable and easy to follow along and superb.
Method: Ingenious, yet brilliant. Dan has put some creative thinking behind this effect.
Gimmick: Very clever. These gimmicks will last a long time, but if you lose your gimmick you can easily be able to easily obtain them.
Set-Up: These should only take a few seconds…once done you’re set to peform.
Practicality: Very, all you need to do is carry these 2 mints and you have a mind-blowing effect.
Overall: The beauty of TickToids is also its simplicity, the magic happens in the spectator’s hands. It’s fun, eays and ultra cool.

Needed Items: You will likely have all the needed items to perform this effect, if not they are easy to get a hold of and are very common.
Practicality: The reactions you’ll get from this effect are amazing and mind-blowing, empty cup, shake and their card is now found inside. Very practical in any coffee and cafe shop.
Angles: The angles can be a problem for some, but with the right confidence and management you can easily control them to make it comfortable for you.

iKNOW

Ups:
- Uses a familiar object
- Easy and workable in the real world.
- Compatible with iPods (Classic, Touch/iPhone, & Nano; basically not the Shuffle) and workable with lots of other Mp3 Players.
- Once it’s setup, you’re ready to go perform a straightforward, astonishing piece of mentalism.
- Preparation is well covered for both Macs and PCs; not too difficult, just takes time.
- I feel it performs best in smaller performance situations – however Jason covers some ideas for scaling up the effect to perform for larger crowds, including the big stage.

Downs:
- Takes a while to set up

Bottom Line:
If you have an iPod (non-shuffle), you have no excuse for not checking this out. Jason Palter’s iKnow was made to be performed.

The second effect in the ‘Influence U’ series is finally here and really kicks things up a notch.

Like the original Influence U effect, Influence U2 comes with everything you need, including: all the props, a bonus ‘Demon Deck’ (not required for the effect but can be used), and a great presentation. Workings of the effect are relatively simple and quite clever.

Unlike the original I.U. which was designed as an impromptu effect, this one is aimed more for more traditional performances (although this one can be performed nearly impromptu).

NOTE: This review is for the North American/Canadian version of the effect. At the time of this writing, the International Edition has yet to be released.

1DECK14TRICKS24HOURS

The premise behind this two disk DVD set was to teach 14 simple but powerful card tricks that could be mastered and ready to perform within 24 hours.

In general, I’d like to say these guys succeeded in their challenge, however, as noted on the DVD, most experienced magicians will probably view this DVD as a ‘reminder’ of older effects that may have been dismissed or overlooked due to their simplicity. Matthew Dowden does offer added tips and his sincere claims that these effects do get powerful reactions despite their lack of knuckle busting moves.

Bottom line:
I think beginning magicians will make good use of this DVD

AND

Experienced magicians will pick up/remember old effects that they can use in ‘emergency situations’ when they are out and about or if they need some quick filler material.

This short booklet teaches three Thought of Cards Across routines that are all impromptu meaning you can perform this with anyone’s shuffled deck without anything extra.

The three routines are of a moderate difficulty level and have a nice streamlined feel.

At times the instructions were a little confusing and took a little rereading, but it was nothing compared to the horrible instructions that typically plague most cheap packet tricks.

Honestly, not too much to say here, the effects are simple, straight forward, impromptu in nature, and yet they are perfect for real worker magicians.

CLOUDBUSTING

Cloud Busting is the ability to apparently blast clouds from their puffy nature into whisps of nothingness. Doing such things without the aid of futuristic weather-manipulating technologies are actually seemingly possible to do.

Without recalling the jaded lines of ad copy for magic products, IMAGINE, being able to control the skies, IMAGINE, being able to produce, vanish, and manipulate clouds seemingly only with the power of your mind, IMAGINE, doing this on a beach, with no lasers, or stooges, or mirrors, and other stuff, while naked!

Cloud Busting Secrets contains all the detailed information on this *science* along with many different presentation ideas, the use of manipulated clouds as thought revelations, making your performances look real, and how to find practical situations to perform Cloud Busting in the real world and use it as a way to promote your business.

When considering adding Cloud Busting to your repertoire, there are a few things you must consider:

- How good of an actor are you, acting is one of the strongest convincers that will keep your audience engagued during the effect

- Vanishing a cloud typically takes 2-5 minutes; fortunately, we gain insight on the many years of experience from Devin and Jerome on what to do and how to keep the audience in on the effect.

- Cloud Busting isn’t something you can always do on a moment’s notice. The weather conditions must be in your favor.

The many years of development on the epoch of ‘weather magic’ by Devin Knight and Jerome Finley are finally here and ready for the world to expand upon the long list of possibilities with these basic principles.

As far as price point goes, $40 for all this amazing knowledge (including other forms of weather magic), and clear, straightforward writing style of Devin Knight (not to mention all the gigs this will get you), this book is a steal.

INFLUENCEU

Influence U is a revamped ‘Telephone The Wizard’ effect for the modern era.

While specifically created for impromptu performances in restaurants and cafes, it has the potential for performance in a close up or stand up show, pending you have the standard table placements for a restaurant with you (spoon, fork, knife, plate, cup, napkins, etc.)

As it relates to the method, it is important that the performer (and sometimes the spectator) are able to speak proper and clear English. You’re not going to have to worry about how badly you did in those English classes, just so long as you can pronounce certain elements of your presentation properly.

After reading the description, many people may think this effect uses the P.A.T.E.O. Force; but it doesn’t! The end selection is truly a free choice.

This is definitely one of those special effects you could use to get gigs or close deals (pending you are in a restaurant, coffee shop, etc.)

Influence U is currently available in two versions, one for the U.S. and Canada and most recently, an ‘International Version’ has been produced. NOTE: the answering machine responds in English only. You receive everything you’re going to need to perform this effect including a special ‘aid’ that you can carry around in your pocket to make performing this mental feat with greater ease.

Factory Sealed Reviewed by Will Swanson

FACTORYSEALED

FACTORY SEALED
Nick Verna
————–

Factory Sealed is just the most bizarre looking trick. It is as impromptu as Bullet, and should take no more or less time doing the uber-quick set-up, if you even want to call it a set-up.

INTRO:

This great video opens with the same teaser from the Ellusionst website a little while back. There is also a montage of the penetrations, and reactions, just like in Bullet. Well put together, too!

Performances:

You can obviously tell just by watching the performances that Factory Sealed makes a permanent impact on the way the spectators see reality.

The first one is with the same 2 kids from the teaser. He uses version 2 for this performance. You might be wondering why the bottom of that bottle looked weird in the teaser. It’s because one of the kid’s tried to push the coin through the bottom, and it made the bottom of the bottle push in like that.

Next, Justin performs the penetration that Nick Verna (burn this genius’ name into your mind) performed in the trailer. Justin gets a great reaction with it. It is the first version. The spectator takes quite a while staring at the bottle in shock.

The next performance is the second version again. The guys at the end keep trying over and over to make the coin go inside just like Justin did. You can hear one of them say, “he’s my hero”.

For the next performance, Justin performs version 2 again. He does encounter a heckler here, though, but he quiets down with foolery after a little bit.

Next up is version 2 again. For some reason Justin says, “you can see the coin through the glass. Now how the bottle like a piece of steel”. No offense, just wondering why you tell the spectator’s to hold it like a piece of steel. Anyways, it is another perfect performance.

And, here’s yet another great performance of version 2.

TEACHING:

Well, here is the teaching, finally. Justin explains how this is his favorite coin in bottle ever. Pretty impressive, huh? It is a great trick.

Version one is up first – it’s the one where you rub the coin against the side of the bottle, and it melts right through. Justin teaches quite a few great variations for this. Justin says this works best with Arrowhead bottles, so you might want to stock up on those. This will work with any bottle though, even glass. This penetration is just beautiful. The teaching is extremely good for this one, along with some great sleights.

The second version is extremely visual, as there is no cover whatsoever. The spectator gets to hold the cap. This is the cleanest coin in bottle ever. You end completely clean for one of the versions for this.

For the other version of this, the spectator can even see the coin as you lay the bottle on top of the coin. This is obviously the one Justin performs the most.

Now, he teaches how to make the bottle seem factory sealed. The spectator cannot open it themselves, but the illusion is audibly perfect.

He now teaches a move to show the bottle completely empty. It can be used for any of the 2 effects.

He now tells you (tells, not teaches) how to get a larger coin inside the bottle that wouldn’t normally fit.

I just have to say, this is extremely practical. Also, this is only scratching the surface to the real underground work of Nick’s effect. You do also get to see some of Justin’s bloopers and whatnot during the credits. Buy Factory Sealed now!

BULLET

BULLET
Matthew Mello
Nick Verna
——
This is the best impromptu coin in bottle I have ever even seen. I am so glad Justin teaches this, he is a great performer, a great teacher, and a great magician overall.

INTRO:
This is basically the titles and such. It is very well put together, and edited very nicely. There is a montage of the coin penetrating the bottle, followed by a montage of the great reactions. Just by watching this, you can tell you’re in for a great DVD/download!

PERFORMANCES:

The first performance is of the first and easiest version of Bullet. It is the one where the spectator’s think there is a hole in the bottom from the trailer. Then you get to see them trying to pop the coin through the bottom of the bottle, but keep dropping the coin.

The next one is the same as above, but the date is noted. The 2 women he performs it for start giggling once they examine the bottle.

The next performance is the first version again, but they completely cut the penetration part out of the video.

The one after that is again another performance of the first version.

Next is the 2-phase version called Airborne using a coin signed on both sides.

Here is another great performance of the Airborne 2 phase routine using a signed coin.

This next one if the first version of Bullet, but done with a signed coin, and a borrowed bottle. Justin goes up to a guy with a bottle full of liquid, it is dumped out, and he immediately performed Bullet. The spectator says Justin basically has special powers.

That is it for the performances for Bullet but there will be flashbacks in the teaching section showing when he does a certain move.

TEACHING:

First off, Justin performs Bullet for the camera (the best I’ve seen him do it so far), and then immediately tells the basic ingenious method behind Bullet. He says, “any sports bottle will work”, but in fact, ANY bottle will work. You could do this with a glass bottle, soda bottle, pill bottle, or whatever your want. He now talks about displaying the bottle, and showing it completely empty. His teaching is incredibly in depth, as this trick is incredible. He teaches the basic sleight used for the penetration very well. This is so easy; someone with arthritis could do this and fool people. The second after you penetrate the coin inside the bottle, you can hand it out immediately. You could even slap the coin again the bottom of the bottle, popping the coin into the bottle, while knocking it right into the spectator’s hands. The penetration looks absolutely devastating. This version cannot be done with the signed coin, but the set-up literally is 3 seconds or less. Also, just to let you know, you don’t even need the cap to do this. You could do this version and all the others with a drinking glass. This is definitely the easiest, and one of the most practical (anything more practical would be a different method for Bullet) coin in bottles you will ever see. You can tell a lot of brainstorming was put into this. I really appreciate this being released to the magic community! Now, on with the other versions.

Justin also talks about performing this where the date of the coin is noted, popped into the bottles, and immediately given to the spectators to keep.

The next one is the 2-phase routine called Airborne. First, the coin is tossed into the air, and the bottle strikes down on the coin, penetrating it right in. You can stop there if you want, a hand out the bottle. Here is the next phase. You lay the coin on the palm of your hand, and just smack the bottle on the coin without moving your hand, the coin pops right through. No Strike Vanish here. This is a very visual well thought out routine. This one does need a label on the bottle, but using one sleight taught in Factory Sealed, you don’t need a label at all. The first penetration is the closest thing to Matthew’s penetration shown in the trailer.

Next, is the borrowed bottle version of the 2 phase Airborne with a signed coin. Justin doesn’t exactly teach it. Instead, they show the performance and writing appears on the screen that tells you what he’s doing and when. I wish he did actually teach this, because there is an awkward move in there that I would really like to see explained. He also performs the move facing away from the camera. By the way that old picture from the first page on the long Bullet and Factory Sealed thread on the Café was talked from that performance.

Now, Justin teaches how to do Airborne with a signed coin. The spectator actually sees without a doubt their signed coin. Then you just penetrate it right into the bottle. They can still see the signed coin! Same thing with the rest of the routine. It is incredibly easy to do both phases with the signed coin.

In the next section, Justin teaches how to do Bullet without sleights. he teaches a few versions with gimmicks, but I don’t think I should get into that. One of the gimmicks can be used for many other things, and will be sold be Ellusionist.

Well that’s all there is to Bullet. There is a bunch of stuff in here I didn’t talk about, because I want to leave it as a surprise, or it could lead to exposure. In the credits, you get to see some bloopers, and also a blooper during performance. This also works great with other objects, too. Justin does not teach in here how to do this with a coin larger than the neck, but it can be done. Just buy Factory Sealed along with this, and you will find out how. The angles are a lot better than you think at first. You just have to try in front of a mirror. Well I hoped you like my review, now go buy Bullet!

IMAGINE

‘Imagine’ cautions potential purchasers that “if [they] are the type of person that often reads something that is a bit different, and immediately believes that it will never work, then this manuscript will not be worthwhile for [them].”

It is true that skeptics may not get past the first couple of pages, but being a person of faith myself, I pressed on and was presently surprised and grew ever more excited as I continued to read through the pages.

Rick Maue is quite thorough in his teaching and progresses through a variety of possible effects using this infrequently used principle. By the end of the book, you’ll have learned several of the fairest, most organic feeling, impromptu mentalism routines. It’s probably as close to real mind reading as you’ll get.

Nevertheless, I have yet to pull this off. Then again, I’ve only tried this a few times and I still have faith that this will eventually work.
