RICKYJAYPLAYSPOKER

Not entirely magical related, but more of a boxed set of how poker has influenced art and literature over the past centuries. The set includes a color printed book with art from Ricky’s extensive collection, a custom deck of ordinary playing cards, a DVD of Ricky showing some of his amazing gambling demonstrations, and a CD complete with 21 tracks, each with a gambling, poker, or hustling theme.

CRYSTALVISION

Both Crystal Card and Crystal Vision use a similar (very clever) prop to create some mysterious magic. Because of their similarities, they’ve been reviewed together.

The crystal card that comes with each of these effects works fairly well, although images are much more crisp with the Crystal Card. That said, Crystal Vision allows you to make any simple design appear on the card: numbers, letters, simple shapes, etc.) I would have liked it if the cards were made of a tougher, thicker plastic, but the lighter, semi flexible nature seems to be required for the best performance.

Overall, this is a very cool prop.

Note: Crystal Card and Crystal Vision are sold separately

TRILOGYSTREAMLINED

Trilogy Streamline literally cuts the original Trilogy in half. In addition, this streamlined version of the 2006 blockbuster effect allows the magician to have the deck out in the open, on the table (or in a spectator’s hands) during the effect, and, costs about $20 less than the original. What a deal!

If you currently own the original Trilogy, never fear, for the $10 conversion booklet will tell you how to take your current Trilogy package and slim it down to the streamlined version.

SMOKEYMAGIC

Trevor Duffy’s Smokey Magic is a fair solution to delivering a smoke like substance to your hand for a production, but I believe the suggested setup could have been simplified. And while I wasn’t much of a Chemistry student, I was smart enough to realize the potential dangerous nature of the chemicals required to perform with this. An old chemistry professor gave me the bottom line: it all depends upon the molarity (concentration) of the chemicals used – something not specified in the instructions.

If you’re going to invest in this setup, I’d make sure I had some ideas ahead of time, and that I really wanted to perform with something like this.

Catapult

I’ll just start off by saying that this is one of the best DVD’s in my collection! It’s up there with Revolutionary Coin Magic. I already knew the basic Catapult vanish and some other moves on this DVD, but I still learned a lot! Brian Platt goes over the basic vanish and variations very well. Everything is taught in depth. I never thought that the Catapult vanish could ever be taken this far. Right after I watched both DVD’s, I already has a whole bunch of crazy ideas running through my head. Just watch the demo, it’s eye candy!

Collard

John Archer’s Collard not only simplifies the traditional workings of the Koran’s medallion with the smooth operation of the necessary (provided) materials, it also wraps a brand new presentation around the routine that cleans up some of the issues with the original presentation. There’s something about this effect that I just can’t make my mind up about.

In the end, the magician is seen to have predicted the name of a stuffed dog. The name is generated one letter at a time (free choice), so you could end up with “Xiierj” as a name. That’s very strong mentalism, but I’m worried some of it may be lost in the light hearted presentation (of generating the dogs name). Then again, maybe the happy energy will loosen up the audience and the actual revelation will be enough to rocket them off the planet.

Stuck

I’m really digging Greg Rostami’s ‘Stuck’. It’s a truly impromptu coin through hand routine that rocks! Of course, when I say it’s truly impromptu, I don’t mean it’s impromptu when you carry around a trick coin that you can ring in, or some gimmick you carry around in your wallet; in the sense of this effect, ‘truly impromptu’ means you’re performing the moment the borrowed coin gets in your hands.

The other thing I like about ‘Stuck’ is how Greg took a simple routine usually performed with just a false transfer, the classic palm, and some acting – and turned it into a beautiful (impromptu), visual, multiphase, customizable (impromptu), awesome, gross, fairly easy, and uh, impromptu, magical experience.

Standing Room Only By Steve Draun

Underground sleight of hand legend Steve Draun has temporarily surfaced to produce a 3-disk DVD set of highly polished sleight of hand routines using cards, coins, rings (of the linking sort), and more. There are some great magician foolers on here and any one of them would compliment your close up material nicely. There are a couple notable effects on these DVDs, like the 3 card monte with the paperclip, and the home made ring flight and… well, I could go on, but it would just put more time between now, and when you order this set.

Just a side note, for a few minutes on the 1st DVD, during one of the explanations, there’s a second audio track running along with the original recording.

Digital Graffiti, the Sleight of Hand of David Peck is an excellent DVD that teaches some amazing sleight of hand routines and sequences, some for close up situations, others for stand up/parlor gigs, and even a few magical moments to add to your manipulation routine. Mr. Peck’s magic is not only visually appealing and magical for all who watch, but for magicians, this DVD offers up a great variety of magic using sleight of hand that ventures far from a deck of cards.
