Merlin Winner Adding Magic To New Film

Posted by Michael on August 23rd, 2012

Gopinath Muthukad, featured above doing the mythic Indian Rope Trick, has been tapped to act as magic consultant for Manthrikathaakol, an upcoming movie starring comic actor Dileep. Few details have been released about the project, but the director has been studying 3D film techniques, so this could be the first 3D magic movie since Siegfried and Roy’s Magic Box. Gopinath Muthukad is a winner of the International Magicians’ Society International Merlin Award and the founder of the Magic Academy Research Centre in Trivandrum, India.

The project was just announced this week, so there is not any promotion being done for the film now. We’ll bring you a trailer as soon as one is released.

New Derren Brown TV Special To Air Easter Monday

Posted by Editor on April 16th, 2011

In continuing with his recent trend of “investigative” TV specials, Derren Brown is set to release a new special that will air in the UK on Easter Monday. The show is titled ‘DERREN BROWN: MIRACLES FOR SALE‘ and here is a little bit about the show from the blog of Mr. Derren Brown himself:

This is the special about faith-healing that some of you will have heard about. It has been the most intensely difficult project that I have attempted: to train an ordinary member of the public as a faith healer, then take him out to Texas, the heart of the Bible Belt, and try to pass him off as the real deal. We filmed this at the end of last year amidst concerns that we had bitten off far more than we could chew….. The film we made is driven by a desire to expose what I consider to be a foul and dangerous fraud at the expense of the sick, the needy and the faithful all over the world.

This certainly will be interesting to see. To all our UK readers please feel free to let us know what you thought of the show!

“Burt Wonderstone” Gets A Director

Posted by Editor on February 27th, 2011

It looks like yet another magic movie is getting the green light this week. A while back we reported that Steve Carell was to star in a new magician-comedy flick “Burt Wonderstone”, the story of a Las Vegas magician, who gets a rival in the form of “a hip younger illusionist,” which leads Carell having to “find a way to rediscover his love for magic. According to the Hollywood Reporter the film has now gotten a director and is one step closer to the big screen. Emmy winning director Charles McDougall has now been called upon to direct the project. The film is set to start shooting within the next few months. Of course, more on this when we hear about it.

“Secret Life Of Houdini” Gets A Screenwriter

Posted by Editor on February 19th, 2011

Last weekend we reported about the soon-to-be Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle flick. Well the Hollywood Reporter has now announced that the acclaimed book by Bill Kalush and Larry Sloman ‘The Secret Life Of Houdini’ is now has a writer attached. Here is a little bit of what the film is being described as:

The studio is not looking to make a biopic but rather an action thriller featuring a character who is part Indiana Jones and part Sherlock Holmes, documenting his rise as a magician along with his covert involvement with the Secret Service.

No word on when the film is going to be released, but if it is around the same time as the other project, we could be looking at another big theatrical run for magic related films. When we hear more, you’ll hear more.

New Movie Pairs Houdini, Arthur Conan Doyle

Posted by Editor on February 13th, 2011

This could be a very interesting concept. Dreamworks Pictures has announced that they are working on a film that will see famous escape artist and magician Harry Houdini team up with the creator of the brilliant Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle. Here is an excerpt from the Hollywood Reporter on the project:

Houdini and Doyle, who was a leading Spiritualist at the time, met in 1920 and became friends for a while despite long-running arguments about the existence of the supernatural…. Straczynski’s script creates a fictional account of the two teaming up with a psychic to solve a set of murders in 1920’s New York.

The film is set to be titled “Voices of The Dead” and as of this writing no word has been given on when the project is to be released in theaters. Of course, more on this if and when we hear anything.

Eric Ross To Perform On Ellen DeGeneres Wednesday

Posted by Editor on January 17th, 2011

Eric Ross has been added to the roster for Wednesday’s Ellen DeGeneres program. He appears on the same bill as Black Swan starlet Natalie Portman who should inspire a 5-alarm coo-fest from Ellen’s studio audience whilst discussing her recent engagement and pregnancy.

The Examiner suggests that Ross was added after Ellen featured a YouTube video of his. Does anyone know which clip got Ellen’s attention?

Either way, this Wednesday, check your local listings for Ellen and set your DVRs accordingly.
