Ricky Jay ca 1983

Posted by Michael on August 7th, 2015

We will bring Video Friday to a close by leaving vaudeville comics behind and returning to magic. This is a 1983 appearance by Ricky Jay on The Merv Griffin Show. It is actually a video to promote the fact that The Merv Griffin Show is now available for licensing, so there are some on screen graphics announcing this in the beginning but it switches to see-through web address by the time the magic starts.

April Fools, Soap Opera Magic And More [Magic Bulletin]

Posted by Michael on April 2nd, 2014

Max Krause dropped into the KASA Fox 2 studios in Albuquerque yesterday for a little April Fool’s Day magic.

Speaking of April Fool’s Day, yesterday’s story about The Naked Mentalist’s new kids’ show was, of course, a joke. iTricks would like to thank him for playing along. Everything else we posted yesterday was legit (as far as we know).

Digital Spy’s Soap Opera News is reporting that Josie Lawrence (best known in the US for the British version of Whose Line Is It Anyway? or Enchanted April) is returning to EastEnders, but not as the character she played for a few years ago. Instead, she will be Susie Vine, a magician with a past she’d like to forget. Her episode will appear this summer.

The New York Times caught Vinnie DePonto’s Charlatan and gave it a fairly positive review. Unfortunately, when the reviewer was there the show had a little technical problem. On the bright side, though, they did compare him to Ricky jay and that is always good!

Speaking of Ricky Jay, The Tonight Show has not seen fit to post clips of his appearance the other night. It is available on Hulu and NBC.com, though. Netflix and Hulu Plus subscribers can catch Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay streaming on those services.

Finally, Neil Patrick Harris’ love of magic is getting more and more mainstream attention and features in his new YoCrunch Yogurt commercial.

Magic On TV, The Web And In Print, Sorcar Update And More [Magic On The Block]

Posted by Michael on March 31st, 2014

What is “Wondershow?” It is a variety show at the Galapagos Art Space on April 11 bringing together magicians like Daniel Greenwolf, John Graham and friend of iTricks Ben Nemzer along with burlesque artist Aurora Black and more. If you are in the NYC area, Ben was good enough to tip us off to a sweet Groupon deal for $12 tickets.

The Times Of India is reporting that PC Sorcar Jr’s campaign has hit some rough waters after allegations he has made “filthy comments” about public officials.

It’s National Reading Month here in the US, but magician driven book Carter Beats The Devil got a shout out this weekend from across the pond in The Guardian’s Book Blog. Alison Flood reports on various famous authors’ favorite but under-rated books and puts in her two cents (or shillings or is it pence?) with a blurb on Glen David Gold’s historical fiction novel.

Finally, there is magic on US television this week (for those who prefer TV to books). First up Ricky Jay will be joining Jimmy Fallon tonight on The Tonight Show. Tuesday at 10:30 PM Eastern TruTV will be running a special sneak peek episode of The Carbonaro Effect, the new prank show starring Michael Carbonaro. It will start airing in May. Although it probably will not feature any magic, How I Met Your Mother with Neil Patrick Harris (he’s my president) will air its hour long series finale tonight on CBS at 8 Eastern. By the way, if you are a Hulu subscriber, Derren Brown: Inside Your Mind is currently available to stream from the All3Media network.
