Let’s Have More Mac!

Posted by Michael on March 23rd, 2021

Let’s just make it a Mac King day. Here is a circa 2000 interview with Mac, again from LViTV’s YouTube archive.

So here is the thing about Mac… I have never met him, spoken with him or even corresponded with him. But whenever anyone has asked me “What magician should I see in Vegas?” any age, any sex, any background Mac King is always on the list. Back in the day my aunt, grandmother and her sister (my great-aunt) would head to Vegas every year for the rodeo with a couple friends. My born in the boot heel of Missouri, Gaither gospel loving, Sunday school teaching gramma asked me for a good magic show to go see while she was there one year. Her and my great aunt gambled a little (I think) but didn’t drink and were not big on cursing or loud music, either. I immediately said “Go see Mac King’s day time show. You won’t miss any of the rodeo and I guarantee you will love him.”

They went; she loved him. She stuck around afterwards and talked to Mac, explaining her grandson was a magician (and I was performing back then) and had told her she had to go see him and she had the best time. Tricks With Your Head had just come out and he gave her (not sold her but gave her) an autographed copy to give me as a thank you. Ironically, I had already ordered a copy and it had arrived while she was in Vegas. Both copies sit next to my desk to this day.

Who Wants More Mac King?

I do! And I am running the place… so here is a preview of Mac’s Vegas show, circa 2000, from the YouTube archives of LViTV.

Behind The Scenes With Mac King

Blogger and YouTuber Kiki Garcia got behind the scenes at Harrah’s in Vegas and managed to snag this short interview with Vegas legend Mac King, who will be extending his nineteen year run in Vegas through at least 2023!

Mac King And The Art Of Magic Stamps Card Deck

Posted by Michael on August 22nd, 2018

We kicked off today with the USPS’s new Art of Magic stamps. Investigating what we could get over on the postal site (I need some framed stamps with art to go with my Star Trek and DC Comics prints), iTricks discovered there is an official Art of Magic magic set with a deck of cards based on the stamp art. Then we discovered Mac King did a series of videos to promote it all for the USPS. You can see the other videos on the Post Office YouTube page (I know? Who knew the Post Office was a YouTuber?) and you can check out the official magic kit on the USPS website.

Piff And Mac King Go Eat Sea Bass

Posted by Michael on January 8th, 2016

Okay, this is basically a big fat commercial for Artisanal Foods in Vegas. But it is a sweet commercial with Mac King and Piff the Magic Dragon where they eat sea bass, edible clay and play with goldfish. This is the second of Piff’s Magic Snackdowns (the first one is here) and it looks like there may be more in the future at the Artisanal Foods YouTube page.

Mac King’s ENTSpeaks Segment [NSFW]

Posted by Michael on February 10th, 2015

This is a little long, at just under 20 minutes, but here is the Mac King ENTSpeaks talk in its entirety. He tells the story of his first trick, talks about the early days with Lance Burton and shows some embarrassing pictures, too. There are even celebrity cameos! It is well worth your time.

There is some mild language and some bodily harm…

Alex Ramon, VanBurch, Mac King And More [Magic Bulletin]

Posted by Michael on July 10th, 2014

Check it out: the five hours it takes to set up Brock Edwards’ stage and show condensed into the duration of a good rodeo ride. I bet the crew wishes it really goes this quickly… Speaking of quickly, there is a bunch of news, so let’s cover it quickly.

Nice coverage of Alex Ramon’s Milbourne Christopher Award in the San Ramon Patch.

I have to say I was quite disappointed by the amount of local media coverage given to the IBM/SAM Combined Convention. I did not catch much TV during the convention, but searches of the local TV, radio and newspaper websites did not reveal anything except for the piece on ICE McDonald we brought you the other day.

KY3 TV reports that Kirby VanBurch has retired five of his big cats to a local big cat animal sanctuary. The three tigers and two leopards (all born in captivity) will live out their lives at the National Tiger Sanctuary located near Branson, MO.

Robin Leach is reporting in the Las Vegas Sun that Mac King is getting numerous requests for assistance with marriage proposals. Honestly, we are not even running magic proposal videos anymore because they are getting to be so common. Of course, if something really amazing pops up you can count on iTricks to pass it along. By the way, Smoothini also gets a mention in Leach’s Star Scribbles column.

And finally, Sydney’s Daily Telegraph ran a piece on Cosentino recently that featured his struggles to learn to read. Apparently the magician did not really pick up the skill until about age 12 and is now lending his name and efforts to the 2014 Wall of Hands, a fundraiser for the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation.
