As Robin Leach continues to allow Las Veags top liners to hijack his column, it is Mac King’s turn to talk about his life as a professional magician as well as author and creator of magic props like his new Lunchbox-O-Magic.

Most interesting is how he got into the comic strip game…

It all started in 2002 when my cousin Bill King, an extremely talented (plus funny and handsome) graphic designer approached me about doing a project combining his graphic talents and my magical knowledge to create a weekly comic strip teaching the public a simple magic stunt. Incredibly, we were able to sell this idea, and Mac King’s Magic in a Minute has been syndicated in papers throughout the world by Universal Press Syndicate (now called Universal Uclick). That weekly color strip features a cartoon version of me teaching my monkey assistant Lewis a magic trick. The comic strip has led to a number of offshoot projects.

Click through and read the rest, most of it is written from the perspective of a monkey. So that’s fun.

Mac King Wore Bib Overalls [First Paid Gig]

Posted by Drew on May 11th, 2010

iTricks contacted the biggest names in magic to hear the stories behind their first paid gigs. Here is Mac King’s tale.

MacKing-1“Both my grandfathers knew a few magic tricks. My mom’s dad, Elwood, even had some magic books in his house. I spent a great deal of my time while visiting him pouring through Henry Hay’s Learn Magic and Walter Gibson’s Magic Explained. He was really instrumental in getting me interested in magic and encouraging my growing fascination. During many of my visits he and my grandmother would invite neighbors over and they’d all sit in the living room and I’d do a little show for them. It was great. He was also responsible for my first paid show.

He was president of the Kiwanis Club in his little town of Greenville, KY and arranged for me to perform for the members at one of their monthly lunches. My recollection is that my show that afternoon consisted of Twentieth Century Silks, Chop Cup, Color Changing Ball to Jumbo Square, and E-Z Hat Loader.

I was probably 12 or 13 years old. I wore bib overalls that had a button fly instead of a zipper. I remember that I actually hid my thumb-tip in between two of the buttons of the button fly. I can only imagine what it would’ve looked like if that thumb tip had accidentally fallen out of the front of my pants. Fortunately the show went off relatively hitch free and I collected my 30 dollar fee without incident.”

Thank you very much Mac King for sharing your story.
