Busking Festival Delights, Confounds San Diego

A busking festival in San Diego’s Seaport Village this weekend left plenty of residents amazed. And yet still more confused.

The inaugural festival (ed note: in 2007) drew few spectators, though, and many were confused about the busking concept.

“People would say, ‘Oh, you’re Buster,’?” recalled Nick Sharpe, an Australian magician now based in Minneapolis. “I’d have to say, ‘No, that’s busker.’?”

There’s less confusion these days, said Jimmy Talksalot, a children’s comedian who lives in El Cajon.

“Now there are a lot of people who know what we are doing,” Talksalot said. “Now, we have people who are coming here to see us on purpose.”

Our iTricks Raves contributor / Magic Friday maven Jamie D. Grant likened watching Jimmy Talksalot to enjoying Jesus himself whale on a gleaming, golden fiddle, so we are happy to see the legendary busker get a little ink.

Big tip of the hat to Jumpin’ Joe Hadsall of the Ellusionist blog for snagging this.
