3 Acts Make It To Vegas [AGT Magic Recap]

Posted by Editor on June 12th, 2013

I am Brandon Parnes and after unfortunately missing last week’s premiere due to a pre-planned vacation, I am back for the summer covering magic for Season 8 of America’s Got Talent! I was welcomed back to not 1 but 3 magic acts this week, and here’s what went down.

The first magic-oriented act of the night was found in San Antonio of a man by the name of Brad Byers. This flamboyantly dressed 53 year old is a sword swallower. Sword swallowing acts haven’t been as popular on AGT as magicians with only 6 being televised. But Byers put not 1 but 2 twists on it. First, he swallowed 9 swords. Second, he did it while being hooked up to a x-ray machine for authenticity.

Doesn’t Brad look familiar? Here’s a refresher from Season 4.

Then came 16 year old Collins Key. He is a close up magician, which is different for AGT. The last 2 people to do close up magic both got eliminated in Vegas, but Collins, Collins is different. Being a young magician close to his age and his story, this guy really hit home for me. His 90 seconds consisted of a bill flight from being burned to inside a bag of popcorn. And even though the judges were a bit distracted by money and food, Collins won them over and went straight to Vegas.

And lastly is Alexandria the Great, a 51 year old female escape artist. For her act she chained herself up at the bottom of a pool and escaped in less than 2 minutes.

See you next week!

So, About the Levitation on America’s Got Talent

Posted by Editor on June 6th, 2013

On the season premiere of America’s Got Talent, we saw an act that was unique on one very important level.

He performed magic when you weren’t expecting it.

No one watching Special Head, before or during his act would peg him as a magician playing a character. He just was a character. This is very important because of the punctuation to the act. Ask yourself this, if he came out and did the same act, but in the graphic below his name is said Special Head – Magician instead of Special Head – Street Performer how much differently would you look at it?

More so, if he spent the first few seconds on screen talking about how long he’s been doing magic, would the levitation be seen as a surprise?

There is a lot made of the fact that you need a “story” to succeed on a show like this. And that’s true. But what if the “story” isn’t a human interest sobfest and rather a curiosity tale of a weirdo with a snicker-worthy name doing really unexpected things?

That might be worth paying attention to.

Yes.

The 2012 comedy megahit Ted not only made Seth MacFarlane even more money for which he can wallow in like Scrooge McDuck it also features iTricks favorite and America’s Got Talent mentalist Eric Dittelman as an extra. He confirms to us that he shot it about a year before the AGT experience.

So now you know!

America’s Got Talent Magician Helps Revamp the Nutcracker

It’s been a few years since Drew Thomas graced the stage of America’s Got Talent. Since then he’s toured and apparently worked some consulting gigs, the latest of which is with the Atlanta Ballet whose 2012 performance on The Nutcracker will contain some Thomas originals.

You don’t really get a look at much magic in this promotional video beyond what looks like a cabinet illusion in the clock, but this is surely something to check out if you’re in the Atlanta area.

Rumor: Jarrett & Raja Headed to Vegas?

Robin Leach reports that the music and magic duo Jarrett and Raja that wow’d on America’s Got Talent this season are headed for Vegas.

The deal for a Strip run will be announced when they return here from the 44-city “AGT” tour. I’m reliably told that their agent is juggling two offers for a hotel-casino residency on the Strip. The duo, piano genius Raja and master magician Jarrett, wrapped a two-year Singapore run pre-“AGT.”

Very good to hear. J&R made no secret when we interviewed them that the AGT run had drained their bank account. A big pay off is very much in order for these guys.

Question is now… where do they land?

America’s Got Talent’s Executive Producer Personally Reaches Out for Magic Acts

During the last few years with Penn & Teller, David Blaine, David Copperfield and Criss Angel off television there is simply no bigger stage for this art than America’s Got Talent. Is is a guaranteed ticket to fame? No. But for the right act, at the right time, it has and could again be a major career boost.

And now, Executive Producer Jason Raff wants to make sure that an illusionist doesn’t let that time pass them by. He personally reached out to iTricks with the following message:

America’s Got Talent has just kicked off their national search for talent. Along with holding auditions in 14 cities this year (cities and dates listed on AGTauditions.com) potential illusionists can also send in a video of their act. Our past magicians have a good track record, with many including Nathan Burton, Murray, Spencer Horseman are currently performing in Vegas.

The producers have been talking to a lot of people in the magic community on ways to attract more magicians. We are making changes to the release or show agreement to address issues some acts have had in the past.

Yes we are a competition show which some acts are nervous about, but we are still one of the few opportunities that exist currently for an illusionist to get the exposure of prime-time network television and be seen by 11-12 million people.

Magicians can send a video directly to me at

http://americasgottalentauditions.com/producer-video-request/

and select Jason on the form when asked which producer referred you.

Jason also pointed out to us that with the popular judge on the panel, Howard Stern publicly repeating that he’d like to see a magician win, the timing is ripe for the right act.

Furthermroe, if you head to AmericasGotTalentAuditions.com/magic you can see personal testimonials from former contestants and what the experience did for their careers.

In all honesty, this is a pretty concerted effort from the top decision makers on this show to aggressively recruit good magic. It might be the best time in the history of the series to audition.

Good luck.
