It is February, so there is a new book available to download for free in the Conjuring Arts Book Club. This month you can download a free, high quality PDF of The Memory Man by Datas. Originally published in 1932, Datas tells his life story and goes over his career performing an extraordinary memory act. Visit the Conjuring Arts Shop for your copy; later this month Asi Wind will lead an online discussion of the text.

Let’s get some housekeeping out of the way: I have been mentioning that I am sick lately and I am currently in the middle of doctor ordered bedrest due to pneumonia. I know I am missing stuff and, worse yet, letting down the iTricksters. As I feel better the next few days I will be making a post or two and hopefully by sometime next week everything will be back to normal.

Some TV news: the cast of the ABC pilot Deception, about a disgraced magician assisting the FBI, now includes Jack Cutmore-Scott in the main role, Amaury Nolasco as an FBI agent and Lenora Crichlow as the magician’s make up artist and producer. The team behind the show includes David Kwong.

Some award news: the BBC is reporting that Matthew Le Mottee is the 2017 Magic Circle Close Up Magician of the Year. They even have some video of him on their site. Meanwhile, back in the States NBC KTEN (Northeast Texas) is reporting that Eric Appel has been named this year’s Mr. Magico magician of the year. Mr. Magico, of course, was originally Joe Monte but in recent years Mr. Magico performers have been trained all over the country.

And some show news: Steve Valentine is performing his autobiographical show Life And Other Deceptions in Studio City Saturday night. Get tickets here. Meanwhile, on the other side of the country Derek DelGaudio’s In and Of Itself, which is produced by Neil Patrick Harris and directed by Frank Oz, will open off Broadway at the Daryl Roth Theater this spring. Variety reports that the engagement will last 10 weeks but does not yet have dates.
