The New York Times Arts Beat is reporting that Teller’s documentary “Tim’s Vermeer” will be distributed by Sony Classics Pictures. The film explores the attempt of Tim Jenison to tie Jan Vermeer’s realistic painting style with the use of technology. The theory that Vermeer, who lived from 1632 to 1675, used something similar to a camera obscure (a kind of early image projector) does not originate with Jenison but he did set out to prove that period materials could be used to create a projection device that could be used to create realistic paintings. “Tim’s Vermeer” is scheduled to be released sometime next year and will most probably be a limited release on the art house circuit. The film has also been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival this September.
