Should magicians, even magicians named Michael, really care that Magic Mike is now synonymous with oiled up male strippers?

We warned everyone. At least one children’s performer is not amused. An actual magician runs the Twitter handle @MagicMike.

So, is this a real issue? Or will we look back in 10 months and wonder if people actually talked about this seriously?

Though I’ve been told to watch this, it’s not for the good story. This film will be forgotten soon after it exits theaters and a month out as a rental imo.

How many magicians have been affected by DJ Magic Mike, who has been dropping crazy bass beats since the late ’80s? Or Magic Johnson? Or Magic Shell? What about the Magic Jack? The word magic is used all the time… oh well. Actually, I wonder how many Magic Mikes out there took the name after 1989, which was when DJ Magic Mike’s first nation wide album came out (I think; I’m actually pretty sure about that) and did they worry about how their use of the name would affect his career? Let’s be honest: it isn’t the most clever stage name ever. I think I first passed on it when I was about 8 or 9!
This reminds me of magicians upset because someone on a TV talent show was using the music they used… the theme from Kill Bill (which is actually the theme from an older movie)! I was struck then by the fact that it was okay to use music associated with two incredibly violent films (the Kill Bill movies and the original Japanese New Battles Without Honor and Humanity) without a second thought but somehow it was terrible if someone else used it? Think… think hard about everything you put in your act. If you want to go for an easy, silly name– and there are legitimate reasons why you might want to do just that– then realize you won’t be the only one. If you want to use music from a popular movie (and again, there are arguments why you may want to), realize you won’t be the only one. Also realize that some people might recognize it and associate it with hyper-violent yakuza killings if the music came from a Japanese gangster film. If you start wearing some new brand name t-shirt because it has a card design, realize you won’t be the only one.
