After a tough night for all the YouTube acts, Rudy Coby and Eric Buss were sent home. Meanwhile the darkhorse, The Magic of Puck was sent through to the semi-finals.

Sorry, Hal, but you are wrong. The masked magician did not reveal this trick. His reveal and what Rudy did were two completely different illusions and methods.

Sharon didn’t apologize for what she called him, she apologized for being to rough on him. She never acknowledged calling him what she did.

Rudy is one of the most original and talented magicians ever. He’s also one of the most imitated. I don’t think people realize how much magic Rudy has created.

I don’t think I’m wrong. The MM version showed the empty dollhouse, he covered the front, a doll appeared inside (Rudy put the clown doll inside, covering the front with his body, can’t reveal more on iTricks). No, the doll didn’t dance like the clown, but that’s elementary The box opened, the girl appears (the clown appears). The only difference was Rudy appearing as the clown at the end, and that method is probably as old as me. And he drug it out through necessity to make it work.  Maybe as Andrew says, he’s a great magician. I can only comment on this performance, I think most agree, it was terrible. I’m not a magician, but NO PART of that trick fooled me.

He’s a legend. If you enjoy magic I suggest you watch more of him on YT.

lol…don’t worry. I don’t mind when you disagree with me. What good is a discussion if a person doesn’t say their true thoughts? You are always respectful and debate with informed opinion. To be honest, I don’t know how that effect is done at the start. I’ll go try to find the MM one you are talking about and watch it. Thanks for the tip. But, it did seem like he was in front of the cage too long and spent too long getting his hands free, so I think that’s what the judges were referring to when they say timing was a problem.
BTW Justin, I like this new Disqus format. It makes following discussion so much easier…(apply Maxwell Smart accent) “a real discussion board at iTricks would work even better”

One little trick if I’m allowed. It really helps to figure out a trick if you look for something a magician does that a person wouldn’t normally do. Example, why would it take 10 seconds to lay a puppet in a box?

The props used are NOT the same, and the methods are entirely different. If there was a video that showed only the trick the MM did I would share a link, but I won’t post exposure. Just because the actions are the same, does not mean the trick is the same. MM used a modified method of the Doll’s House, Rudy uses a blammo box. Both reveal different, work different and look different.

Rudy is awesome! unfortunately his theatrical style didn’t translate to the attention deficit mindset of AGT. Puppet boy is meant to be a longer routine, and when you take out the parts of working him as a puppet and stomping on his balloon dog, and race through all the action to fit it in 90 seconds, it throws off the pacing and becomes confusing. The big clown cutting his strings seems to take up a lot longer part of the act (proportionately) whereas in the original version, the amount of time devoted to that is appropriate compared to the pace of the overall act. Puck was fine, but there is no way that doing Sean Begonia’s dancing hank trumps the pure originality of Rudy. Rudy deserved better than the treatment that show gave him.

I checked some of his youtube videos. To me his act is more like Benny Hill than magic. I don’t see many worth while magic effects, just costumes and supposed comedy? How old is this guy, doing skits with Dick Clark?

See, now this is what I don’t get about some performances. If it takes time to set this trick up, why resort to either making the audience wait or distracting them? Why not find a way to speed up the set up then to make it appear as natural timing? It’s the delay that draws the attention and loses peoples attention. As soon as it takes too long, people think the magician is bad and he is struggling to pull off the affect.
