In this, the premiere episode of Justin Willman’s Magic Meltdown we see renditions of a few tricks you know, a coffee shop tricks that’s likely against health code and the most fuel efficient illusion you’ll see today.

What say you?

  • Jay Sankey

Groan. Just what magic needs. More set-ups, more reactions goosed by cameras, more pointless, cliche magic effects forced into ‘real life’ situations. And the woman’s reaction to the shrinking of her hummer was just what it should be— underwhelmed and ‘politely playing along.’ But at least Justin has a sense of humor and doesn’t take himself too seriously. Deserves credit for that much. PS. “You know what’s on this one…” Funny.

Couple of bad angles (revealed) on the part of the cameraman. Illustrates how valuable a videographer with method knowledge is.

Just for curiosity you are the real Jay Sankey?

    Sounds like the real Sankey…

I’m on the fence with this. I think there’s enough magic there for a half hour special crammed into 5:29. One of the best effects, with the flash drives, was edited to hell. There’s not one clear moment of magic, when that’s such a simple, visual effect. That said, it’s a solid magic ‘special’.

I think it’s a missed opportunity. Justin has the opportunity to tread new ground, and he just does what other TV magicians have done before. Dan White had an interesting story behind the Supernaturalist, and I think he would have had many more ‘adventures’ we would follow him on. Here Justin just picks a topic and does tricks on that topic. No storyline, no conflict, and he kinda has a vibe to him that he’s there to ‘fool & freak’ when he could ‘connect & communicate.’

Finally, at least he’s not trying to be anyone else, like Keith Barry trying desperately to be Derren Brown on his specials. This is still just the first episode, I wish Justin the best with the series and I hope it grows in interesting ways for him!

I think Hummer anything has been done to death now too, but I don’t really like the blocking of the camera and selling that as magic for anything.
