Last week, we heard about a man who got in trouble for starting a school board meeting with the vanishing bra trick. This week, we take a look at another trick where a magician makes a woman’s underwear disappear, only to reappear on another woman and vice versa. It’s David Copperfield’s Panty Swap.

We’ve always been kind of amazed that this trick doesn’t come off creepier. It really speaks to the presentation and skill of DC that he can walk a minefield like this.

Probably shouldn’t say this…You can look at the video and detect how it’s done. But as with all Copperfield’s tricks, the entertainment is there.

Dave Williamson created this effect (if I’m not mistaken) – I saw him do it at an Abbott’s – but with little boys and the story was about how his mom would make him write his name in his underwear before going to camp, etc. basically it was fucking hilarious.

I’m pretty sure this was not to be taken as a serious piece and was more of a fun throw-away, for lack of a better term.  I remember back in the day when David started going this routine it created a ton of talk on the boards both magic and laymen (ie the cafe’ and the DC forum and other forums for some of the theaters he toured to) and in the end that’s what you want.  As they say in pro-wrestling “controversy creates cash” and I bet that’s exactly what this routine did.

Did Copperfield need to stoop to this with all his talent?

Have no idea why this effect was performed by Copperfield unless it was for the controversy as Dan said.  It is creepy and who really wants to talk about underwear?  I would think most women would be embarrassed to have their panties pulled up so people can see what color they are and have David put a piece of tape on them.

I assume you’re a magician? Most women might be embarrassed, doesn’t this give you a clue? I thought it was just entertainment. If women were that embarrassed, you wouldn’t see ‘Victoria Secrets’ commercials on TV, women’s personal products, etc. Compared to the ads today, Copperfield’s trick was nothing. After thousands saw the show, I didn’t see any big protests.

P.S.  I’ve done this trick many times.

Hal, ask your wife if she would like her panties pulled up on national TV by a woman she doesn’t know and then have the celebrity put a piece of tape on them.  Models being paid to prance around is different than pulling somoeone out of the crowd.  It is also different if you are in a parlor setting where it would most likely be other people you know or not a couple thousand you don’t.

Don’t think I would ever protest something like that, but think it is odd/strange.

I guess it could be worse, like impregnating a woman on stage…err wait he did that too LOL!
