Make A Pyrex Tube Completely Disappear… With Science!

Posted by Editor on September 29th, 2011

A tube. A solid pyrex tube seen in laboratories and high school science classes all over the world. A bowl of oil. A full bowl of vegetable oil found in your very own kitchen cabinet.

But what if I were to tell you that when you place the former in the latter the tube vanishes, as if traveling through a door to another dimension.

How is that possible? The power of physics.

When light moves from one medium to another, it generally bends slightly. This is because the properties of the media allow light to move through them at different speeds. When light hits the change in media at an angle, one side of it moves faster than the other. This is like planting one foot and moving the other – you’ll twist around. The light does the same. People can see window glass and clear water mostly because light distorts between the glass or water, and the air. People can also see the distortions between the pyrex and the air. By coincidence, though, there is no difference in the speed of light through vegetable oil and through pyrex. No distortions, and no tinting to the pyrex, mean that no one can see the difference between them. Surrounded by oil – the pyrex disappears.

Sure, it’s a silly demonstration, but when someone announces they are going to vanish a Kindergarten class encased in a pyrex cylinder into a pool filled with vegetable oil at Sea World, you’ll know where it came from.

Bra Trick At School Board Meeting Prompts Apology

Bra Trick Comedy Magic Trick - YouTube.jpg

There is a time and place for everything. For example, classic (if still creepy) comedy magic staple The Bra Trick might work best on stage or amongst friends. Want to know where it really, really doesn’t work?

At a school committee meeting.

Just ask Russell Fitzgerald…

The subject of the trick, Ellen Killian, said she did not want to talk about it. The teacher appeared embarrassed. Other board members also declined comment.

Fitzgerald told our Wicked Local partner The Enterprise of Brockton after the meeting that he did not think the trick was inappropriate. He said he did it because he likes it.

He told NewsCenter 5′s Pam Cross that he was trying to open the meeting in a light hearted way before they got to serious business.

Consider this a public service announcement for all iTricks readers. Just because you are creating a minor miracle it doesn’t mean you should forget all social graces.

Jonathan Bryce Attempts Full View Buried Alive Escape While Goo Goo Doll Narrates

Posted by Editor on September 29th, 2011

Escape artist Jonathan Bryce is legitimately insane. Like, not in a press release kind of way, like a the first time we met him he spent 15 minutes explaining an escape where he puts a loaded gun in his mouth kind of way.

He very much cherishes the value of real danger when planning an escape and this is no different. Bryce took to the Music Is Art festival in Buffalo, NY to perform a fully surrounded buried alive escape. Not enough for you? How about Goo Goo Dolls bassist Robby Takac provides the color commentary?

Enjoy.

Also, this is our favorite Goo Goo Dolls song.

Joshua Jay Explains How His Magic Career Ended, How He Got It Back

Posted by Editor on September 29th, 2011

Joshua Jay could have never performed magic the same way again. A freak injury sustained while boating with friends shattered his dominant hand and saddled him with a grim diagnosis. The above video describes, for the first time by the medical professionals who worked on him, exactly how bad the damage was and how hard Josh had to work to get back to where he is today.

Very few people work as hard as Josh does to make a career from this art. This is yet another example.
