An adaptation for Glen David Gold’s 2002 novel Carter Beats The Devil is something that has percolated in development hell for as long as we’ve run iTricks. However, it looks like it has finally moved to the next step as a script has been completed and Warner Brothers is keen on tabbing an A-List actor and director for the project.
Their first choice to play the titular magician who finds himself amidst a conspiracy after the president dies? Johnny Depp.
This could be one of many, many false starts for the project. It was initially optioned by Tom Cruise as a starring vehicle for himself. Then AMC, fresh off the success of Mad Men, began development as a series.
