Spanish magicians are up in arms over a television show hosted by a rebel prestidigitator Val Valentino who reveals many of the secrets behind their tricks. according to many sources including The Guardian in the UK. The magicians have asked Spanish lawyers to come up with ways of challenging the Masked Magician and his programme ‘Magic Without Secrets’ in court, claiming that their favourite tricks should be protected by intellectual property laws. One magician Magicus stated on his blog:

The secrets that magicians have been holding on to forever with the sole intention of entertaining their audiences are being exposed with the only aim of gaining a few points of audience rating

Magicians in Brazil reportedly were partially successful in a case against the same Masked Magician show when it was aired by a television station there, but lawyers said Spanish law offered little protection.

Another angry magic fan has even used his Facebook page to call on someone to kill the Masked Magician “for spoiling the illusion behind the tricks”.

“The best thing is to keep your trick secret and not teach it to anyone else,” said a Spanish lawyer, Andy Ramos on his blog.

Our advice ? give Valentino and his tiresome show the attention it deserves. None

That's why you are posting about it on here? How are them complaining and you exploiting any difference? This still shows up on search engines.

If you are doing the illusions he reveals in the show, you're a hack and I think its time for you to hang up the tuxedo and top hat for good. A great illusion doesn't come complete from a magic dealer.

Does it really matter what he does? No, because no one will remember in a few months. Magicians really are the only ones who truly care about this stuff. Laymen watch it, find it interesting, then forget about it. And you shouldn't have a problem as long as you present it differently. These shows, even though they are annoying, are not as horrible as some magicians would make them out to be.

    All so true…
But the point I was trying to make was that you can't put up an article about him, then tell everyone to ignore him.
“Hello kettle, this the pot… your black!”

  • naquada

its more a case of ignore by not writing in and complaining as magicians… dont go through lawsuits and court action.. all that does is fuel the network to say 'we have something so hot people want to ban it'

the best 'magician' course of action is to do nothing… the best course of action for the public… dont watch it.. and if they feel like it.. tell the networks its not something they want to watch and will avoid the programming they provide..

there is a thin line between reporting it from the point of view of something thats happening, and reporting it to make it more visible..

i possibly should have worded the last line better then :) blame it on my swine flu ;)

    Amen
I wote about the same issue, but in latin america http://www.pastomagic.com/blog/?p=1132

Yeah… and networks don't ever use a search engine and they will never see this little discussion.
Any time he gets mentioned, good or bad, it's a point towards keeping him on TV.
If none of you people can see that…. you are seriously deluded.
Ignoring him means exactly that!! Ignoring him… that means not one SINGLE word.
Don't talk about him, don't watch him, and don't report on him.

  • toemasie

This is super old, but just in case you missed it, watch him mess up a card trick on a talk show!! It's painful to watch. Good thing he wears a mask! How embarrassing.

val is doing a good thing cause he ENCOURAGES other magicans to make better tricks which will be harder to reveal and hich will also make it more intresting for the audience to watch
