Akira Fujii

Posted by Editor on August 31st, 2009

Akira Fujii is a Japanese magician and a familiar face to TV viewers. He was partly responsible for the magic boom that swept Japan a few years ago, a period during which magicians could be seen on television every day.

He is best-known among laymen for the cards-from-mouth gag, but in fact he’s one of the most technically brilliant card and coin handlers out there.

Check out his YouTube channel to see examples of his excellent classic pass, cover pass, diagonal palm shift, coins across variations and more.

Neil Henley is a magic enthusiast and occasional performer who still hasn’t given up his day job. He lives near Tokyo, Japan, and is responsible for the Japanjin blog.

Weatherford Says Scarlett Is A Throw Back

Posted by Editor on August 31st, 2009

Mike Weatherford thinks Scarlett’s newest show at the Riviera is reminiscent of a bygone era. The problem is he doesn’t mean it as a compliment. Take the opening line to his review:

Scarlett and her Seductive Ladies of Magic.” They’re so … 2005.

But wait, it goes back further.

Tourists who see maybe one live show a year would be OK with it. Scarlett’s a big star, right? Must be, if she has her picture on billboards and stands on the stage where Frank Sinatra once sang (so did an alligator wrestler in “Splash,” but that’s another story).

But now, Tahiti Village and other time-shares are on the financial skids. For that matter, so is the Riv. A-list shows are discounting like mad. And Scarlett still seems so … 1989.

And just when you think this time machine only goes one way.

Slicker magicians say funny stuff when they work an old staple, a shell game of multiplying liquor bottles. Scarlett dresses up like Betty Boop and speaks not a word as she shuffles bottles.

A girl’s gotta use her charms. Fortunately for Scarlett, magic is still so … 1996.

Yipes.

Change In Schedule: theory11 Live Chat Tonight

Posted by Editor on August 31st, 2009

Due to an unforeseen change in schedule, Apollo Robbins will not be conducting the iTricks Clinic tonight. Instead, the fine folks at theory11 (who just turned two years old) will be stopping by for an edition of iTricks Live.

“But iTricks,” you’re now saying. “who from theory11 will be a part of the broadcast?”

That’s for us to know and you to find out but rest assured, it will be well worth seeing. Also, we’re going to have some announcements about future Clinic guests.

Tonight. 9 p.m. EST. theory11 live chat. Bang. A. Gong.
