Facebook | Videos Posted by Justin Roberts: Halftime Entertainer Almost Dies at the OKC Thunder Game

We are a little late on the news story element of this but escape artist Kristen Johnson had a major problem while trying her full-view water torture cell escape at half court during an Oklahoma City Thunder game last week. Here was the explanation from her partner Kevin on The Magic Cafe message board…

Kristen is alright. She suffered a hypoxic seizure (shallow water blackout).

After I got the lid unlocked and removed…I jumped on top, and got her head above water. At that point she started breathing again on her own. She then had enough composure to get herself the rest of the way out.

She had not been feeling well earlier in the day. That along with low blood sugar is most likely what brought the blackout on. We were able to see footage of it already.

Meanwhile, we were sent this video clip of the incident, filmed by someone in the audience and posted on Facebook. For eagle-eyed iTricks readers this is the very same routine that Wayne Kawamoto singled out as the must-see element of next week’s Masters of Illusion show.

We wish the best to Kristen and Kevin, although according to the Cafe posting they are already on the road.

Not a good time for ladies in water tanks……first Amila in the Uri Geller Show and now this…..maybe a conspiracy ;)

One month into 2099 and we have two failed Water Tank escapes already…

but still, NOTHING compared to FISM in Portugal.

Now THAT was a failed water tank escape!

  • Timothy Drake

    Hello Tim,

2099? You expect to be around that long? LOL

I don't know about the failed tank escape in Portugal but I do know a story about one going wrong at a TAOM convention in Fort Worth or Dallas years ago. When the guy got into trouble his wife was asked where the key was and her answer was… ” In our Hotel Room” so the tank had to be knocked over and when it broke all the water went off the stage and doused the front row big time. Half the audience had to stand on their chairs as the floor was so flooded. The wooden floor at the hotel had to be replace as well.

Can you tell us about the FISM story ?

So glad to hear Kristen will be ok.

    Best,

    Tim

Kristen is doing fine. We just wrapped up 2 big shows for 4,000 people at an arena in Beaumont, TX, where Kristen performed her 600th water torture cell.

All went well and tomorrow night, January 26th is Masters of illusion, which has Kristen as the finale.

Thanks to everyone for the thoughts & prayers.

For some reason this JUST dawned on me. Kevin has to unlock the top of the tank? So the tank truely is locked? So there is no trick photography or studio edits? She actually does live stuff…uh…live.
    Very cool.
Glad Kristen is doing well. That really was scary.

2099… sorry, I was there last week but now I'm back ;)

I think it was Mago Anton… he did a trick where a card was selected, then the deck thrown into a huge tank of water. He then jumped into the tank (with a weight I think) and attempted to find the card. However, when he jumped in the front of the glass (perspex?) tank shattered and he and all the water went rushing to the stage.

The entire front row (comprised of FISM VIPS all dressed to the nines) were drenched and I've never seen an audience jump to their feet at a magic show as fast as they did.

Your pun did not fall on deaf ears Troy. But you are wrong.

Hmmm FiF. Now you have my attention.
I am familiar with Houdini's method and techniques but this looks so much different, mainly in that it was not conceled.
I wonder what you are meaning then?

It's terrible to hear news when these things go wrong. Escapes are serious business when real escape artists do them. I heard another water escape is coming up soon. The S.A.M. #1, (the first original SAM club) will have it's “100 Anniversary Salute To Magic” show on Broadway NYC. It's in the same theater Houdini played, and talk surrounding the event is that someone will be doing some sort of dangerous water escape. Details on my end are sketchy what it is. But I was told it's not a rumor. The people actually met in the theater already to check out some things. Let's hope the bad luck streak is over!

The names in that show are big so I think this one will be talked about for a long time. Hopefully Justin will get some info up about it for those wanting to go.
