As a special Halloween treat, Dan and Dave have put together a new bag of tricks…but it’s not what you think. Organic, or Studies on Engineering Miracles, is their first venture outside of card magic, and it’s full of 15 phenomenal impromptu routines perfect for the street magician.
Outlined in Organic is not only the explanation of each effect, but the process in which it was developed. Learn how to create miracles with everyday normal objects and be inspired by whatever situation you find yourself in.
Who better to spook us into Halloween then our friend Simon Drake. This is his signature sawing routine, it’s pretty brutal so viewer discretion is advised.
• If you are attending the show tonight, get used to those dog tags they are going to be distributed to everyone who sees tonight’s two shows.
• VIPs are going to get a fancier model dogtag featuring a rabbit peaking from behind a curtain. Our mole tells us that the original plan was to give out “rabbit’s feet” coated in glow-in-the-dark paint. Unfortunately, glow-in-the-dark paint smells terrible and the switch was made.
• Director Serge Denoncourt tells Las Vegas Review-Journal writer Mike Weatherford that if you are planning to see Mindfreak: The Show! then you probably shouldn’t come.
• Also told to Weatherford, Criss is not doing press before the show but it’s fine because he and Denocourt “speak with one voice.”
The Las Vegas Sun is all over the magic beat today, speaking with some of the Strip’s brightest industry stars for their opinion on Criss Angel’s Believe. Unsurprisingly, there is not a cross word spoken, including any of these by Jeff McBride.
“I think Criss is really attempting something new here,” McBride said. “It’s really unprecedented what Criss is doing, a show of this magnitude.”
McBride said he believes Angel and his show will “re-energize the world of magic.”
Steve Wyrick also thinks the negative reviews were a bit much
Wyrick, who said he considers Angel “a friend,” saw the first preview performance of “Believe” on Sept. 26. Afterward he said he was impressed by the early version of the show and thought the negative buzz was little more than personal sour grapes.
“Everybody’s so quick to be critical,” he said. “I think the guy needs a break … I thought the show was good.”
Also offering general praise is Penn, Teller and Lance Burton who have not seen the show in full but will be in attendance tonight.
Keith Barry’s show opened earlier this week at the Planet Hollywood and today we get a review from the Las Vegas Sun. Spoiler alert: they dig it.
“I don’t believe in mind readers or psychics and tell audiences that,” he says, “but then I do it anyway.”
The Vegas production is a selection of the best illusions from three touring shows. The show is part magic, part hypnosis, part psychology. And comedy is as important as the illusions.
“It’s a mixture of all different art forms. I wanted to create a new form of entertainment, a different type of show,” he says. “I want people to be amazed, but first I want them to laugh. I want to make them smile and then amaze them with some good magic.”
