Winning Numbers By Paul Romhany:
This one person routine is easy to perform, and like all of Paul’s work, is taken from real-world working situations. The method is highly practical, and so easy to perform, you can put this to your act straight away. Paul explains THREE different versions of this routine that he has been performing on cruise ships, private functions and trade shows.
Two-Faced is an audience-tested utility prop that should find favor with magicians and mentalists alike. What could be better than an ordinary-looking object that can perform a multitude of magical changes? Two-Faced is an innocent-looking folio-style photo frame, similar to what a professional photography studio would give you with your 8×10 portrait, with a heavy-duty construction that will last for years.

Wine – Oh , Wine To Light Bulb:
A lamp is seen on stage, lit. A wine bottle and glass are displayed along with a menu from an elegant restaurant. The magician pours a drink into the glass which remains suspended in mid air. The wine is poured from the glass into the menu, the pages are opened and the wine has vanished. At the exact moment the wine vanished, the light bulb went out. The magician walks to the lamp, removes the shade and finds the wine is now inside the light bulb. The bulb is unscrewed, the wine poured into a glass and the magician toasts his audience!

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is from our Weekend Editor Andrew Webb. Take it away AW…
Actually I’m not leaving permanently, just for a month…
Before Christmas 2005 I met someone who would change my life forever, and most definitely for the better, and someone who I wished to spend the rest of my life with.
Michelle and myself started going out on January 28th 2006, and on October 4th 2008 she will become my wife. Michelle is my closest friend, my soul mate, my confident and adviser, the woman I love, and on the 28th May 2007, the woman, under Pont Alexander III bridge in Paris, who I asked to marry me.
There’s little more I can say, other than she is singularly the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I am so glad she wants to spend the rest of her, and my, life together… I am very lucky to have such a wonderful person in my life.
..So I will be back at the start of November to write again for iTricks.
UPDATE: USA buyers should read the particulars on possible format issues from Drake HQ AFTER THE JUMP…
In the 1990’s Simon Drake managed to further magic on television by breaking with the Rabbits from hats image of the magician to bring a darker and more shocking type of magic into peoples homes. The Secret Cabaret ran for two series of six episodes each on Channel 4 in the UK.
Simon was praised by the magic world and reviews for giving a new and shocking twist to the presentation of illusions. Each show featured sideshow acts and vintage archive footage, including freak show material, and various mini stories and presentations on fraud and confidence tricks.
The Secret Cabaret reflected heavy Gothic, and heavy metal influences, almost all the illusions and tricks having a very shocking side to them. The show had major input from the cream of magic, Ricky Jay, Jim Steinmeyer, James Randi, Max Maven, David Berglas to name but a few.
The show became a cult icon although it was never released on DVD or Video, thankfully after years of talks with Channel 4 Simon Drake released The Secret Cabaret – The Creator’s Cut, containing all of Simon’s Performances from the show. Which were widely acknowledged as the best of this ground-breaking series. Sadly the license for use of the material was limited and is now nearing an end and speaking with Simon he’s said that it will not be possible to sell or re-master, and there will be no plans to release the material again.
Only a few hundred copies now remain which, no doubt, will in time become sought after collector’s items. The upside of this is that you can grab the remaining copies at half their original price (making them £12.50+p&p).. True illusion fans cannot be without a copy directly from www.secretcabaret.com
Once the current set of DVD’s are gone.. The Secret Cabaret will vanish… Forever.
Need one more reason to pick up the discs? How about about an unsolicited, glowing review from our own Andrew Mayne a few months ago. Find it AFTER THE JUMP….
If you’re ever in London, you must book tickets to Simon Drakes ‘House of Magic’. The star The Secret Cabaret, horror, gothic and gruesome magic set up a permanently theme 4,000 square foot Victorian residence back in 1996 for evening shows of his signature magic. The venue is now open to the public on a once a month basis for shows, drinks and dancing, as well as being available for private hire.
But it’s much more than just a show. It’s an experience, with everything from a whispering chair that will tell your fortune, to a haunted cellar full of surprises. Simons evening show captures the feel of the Secret Cabaret, and without a word spoken, leaves you totally in awe of his performance..
The House of Magic is located at a secret location not far from the central part of London, a high red metal gate hides a secret world of illusion, magic, and enchantment. Simon was kind enough to let your weekend reporter hold his stag do there this Friday, and I fully recommend it as a night out (even if your not getting married!)…
After the show we talked with Simon about a recent shoot in the venue and his house above the theater for Bizarre Magazine. The Halloween issue which comes out 15th October in the UK features an extensive article on the venue, show, Simon and his Gothic horror magic.
With some rare and unique shots normally reserved for only very special guests and Simon’s crew, the article captures Simon Drake and the essence of the House of Magic..
UPDATE: As pointed out in the comments, we’re dumb. The flick is called “Life Sold Separately” and the IMDb link is after the jump.
In an excellent article from The New York Times magazine about Paul Feig, the mastermind behind NBC’s cancelled-but-classic Freaks and Geeks we get a lot of odd details about a very odd man. He harbors a resentment towards Malcolm In The Middle, he’s in many ways defined by a Donald Duck pin he was found off in his teen years and oddly he once gambled his entire nest egg shooting a film featuring Penn Jillette.
Feig, apparently unique among stand-up comics, never succumbed to drugs or alcohol. He saved his money, worked assiduously and during the off-season, used his savings to shoot a 16-millimeter movie starring Penn Jillette. The film, about four characters who meet in a field, was shot over six days, cost Feig $30,000, never found an audience and managed to obliterate the first nest egg he acquired in his life. When it was finished and time to get back to “Sabrina” to refresh his coffers, he was informed that he would not be invited back.
We’ve officially found a new curiosity. A Paul Feig directed Penn Jillette film? Need. More. Information.
