Women In Magic: From The Boxes To The Spotlight

American Public Radio posted this transcript of a story highlighting the progress made by women in magic. From the limited role of doting assistant to the headlining spots once specifically reserved for men, they’ve come a long way.

And for girls who love magic, there are more and more female role models, women with their own solo acts. And for Evans, it’s her name on the marquee for about half of her bookings these days. She’s the main attraction at the Castle’s close-up gallery, a small Victorian parlor where the crowd is near enough to get properly wowed by her masterful sleight of hand. She says she’s learned magic performance from the best seat in the house, the one that male magicians never get to sit in: The one onstage, inside the box.

The article is well worth a read and includes a quote from Kevin James where he refers to the women assistants as the unsung heroes of the magic community.

When David Met Harmony…

We’ve blogged quite a bit about the friendship between Harmony Korine and David Blaine over the last few weeks. Mainly, because Korine keeps talking about Blaine in interviews and David keeps showing up at Harmony’s speaking engagements, be it to tell an obscenity-riddled anecdote or to do a simple card trick.

But now, leave it to Ain’t It Cool News to unveil how they first met

Capone: Originally, and then the film you two did together.

HK: Well, it was around the time of KIDS and I had, actually, heard about this guy who was putting himself in a pizza oven, and they were turning on the heat. And, it was actually a few blocks from my house.

Capone: He was more, like, underground.

HK: Yeah, he had never done anything, any shows. We were both, like, 20 years old. So, I went over, and he had his whole body in a pizza oven that was on full blast, except for his toes. But his toenails were starting to melt or starting to warp, but his body was pretty much okay.

That’s how I met him. And, I just thought, Man, you know, he’s such an interesting guy. I never met anyone that did the types of things that he was doing. And, like, he was so extreme, it’s always been exciting for me to hang out with him. Yeah, that was it. And, then, when I did that show with him, I had just started to kind of get my life together. I had gotten off the narcotics, and I felt like it was a good time to film some guy who starved to death in a box.

So now we know…
